As retired chiropractors who also operated the Lifeline Center for Holistic Health in New Jersey and are now leaders in Isagenix International, a health product that they have found to have amazing results, the Nozeks feel that maintaining your physical health is a top priority, but they also understand that physical health is not just about nutrition and exercise; it must also encompass your emotional and mental health.

Just like all of us, the Nozeks have had their struggles. They’ve experienced the ups and downs of operating a business and raising a family, along with personal struggles. Ina is very forthright about her battles with her weight, and both Glenn and Ina struggled with quitting smoking-a habit they knew that, especially as future health experts, they had to break, difficult as it was. In short, they are human, and that makes them able to relate to the rest of us, and their warmth and desire to help others shines through in these pages.

The problem most people have in making realistic and lasting changes in their lives is knowing where to start. The Nozeks tackle that issue early in the book by talking about the importance of believing in yourself. It’s usually our fears and self-doubts that hold us back from pursuing our dreams and succeeding. The Nozeks share their own personal stories of how they and others learned to believe in themselves. One topic in these early chapters that I thought was especially effective was looking at the “Ladder of Commitment.” It helps you to understand how committed you are to making lasting changes, and it ultimately encourages you to make a promise to yourself to stay committed and succeed.

Another powerful chapter talks about the need to separate ourselves from negativity. I agree with the Nozeks in their advocating for not watching the news because almost all of it is irrelevant to our lives anyway, and most of it is driven to stir up fear in people. We need to separate ourselves from everything that causes us fear and anxiety or makes us negative and self-doubting, including what we read, watch, and listen to and the toxic people around us.

Another chapter focuses on the power of affirmations, something I’m a firm believer in. I loved Ina’s story of how she used affirmations not only to audition for Wheel of Fortune, but that she actually got on the show and won! Building on her own experiences, she teaches us how to create our own affirmations to develop a mindset that is ready to achieve whatever we choose to focus on.

Once we have worked through separating our true, powerful, and passionate selves from what holds us back in life, we are then ready to find out our “why.” The exercises following each chapter are especially helpful for figuring out what we truly want in life and for creating steps to work toward achieving it. The Nozeks guide us in how to learn to be honest with ourselves about what we want so we do not give up or compromise our dreams or our integrity.

Other chapters are focused on more traditional health matters, but even these chapters are relevant to trusting in your inner physician. The Nozeks make the point that we are all biochemically different, so while it’s important for us to eat nutritious foods, we also need to pay attention to how our bodies react to different foods. And just as we need to separate ourselves from negative and toxic people in our lives, we need to separate our bodies from the toxins in our foods and in our environment. One chapter of the book is devoted to the topic of cleansing-how to go about finding a reliable product to use, and the benefits to be achieved. Another chapter is devoted to stress management.

But perhaps best of all is the message of balance, which means that while we need to stop listening to the world and listen to ourselves, that doesn’t mean that we become self-absorbed, but that we become better people who will also help others down the same path to greater happiness. The Nozeks model that in their marriage by serving one another. They have made a commitment to be happily married, and it must be working because they’ve been married since 1988. I loved their advice on the importance of giving and how it relates to marriage:

“When it comes to relationships, being a giver is absolutely critical for success. On our wedding day, back in 1988, I’ll never forget what Glenn’s Dad said to us: ‘Marriage is not a 50/50 proposition. It’s a 70/30 proposition, and if you each give 70 percent, it will come out 50/50.’ What I’ve later learned as we continue to spend many successful married years together is that it’s not even 70/30 but rather 100/100. Each partner needs to give 100 percent. When each partner is a giver, that’s when the marriage can be truly successful. In any relationship, being a giver and giving 100 percent of yourself is what it takes. Whether it’s with your friends, business partners, family members, or any relationship in which you are wanting success, that is what it takes.”

Avoid Diabetics With These Tips

Type 2 Diabetes may very well be the least understood and most over-treated common disease in America. That was my “walk-away” conclusion after reading “Type 2 Diabetes: The Owner’s Manual” by Daryl Wein.

Wein, who himself has Type 2 Diabetes, is a medical professional who began personal research on the disease after contracting it. The result is a very informative guide that has a lot of valuable information for patients and doctors alike. I don’t have Type 2 Diabetes but I learned a lot of valuable tips that will help in my weight loss efforts.

The treatment regimen Daryl has come up with, if followed, means for many Type 2 patients that they won’t have to take medication but can control the disease and live a normal lifestyle simply by eating healthy and living a healthier lifestyle.

Wein’s biggest advice is to avoid all starches. Starches, which convert to sugar in the body, is public enemy number one for diabetics. More than once in his book Wein hammers home the point – “The single most important thing to do to manage Type 2 Diabetes is to avoid eating carbohydrates.”

Of course, all of us should avoid sugary foods. Diabetics should avoid all breakfast cereal, all breads, rice, potatoes, corn, tortillas, and all chips and crackers. It doesn’t matter much, stresses Wein, whether the rice or bread is white or brown. Foods lowest in carbohydrates that can be used for healthy meals include eggs, meat, fish, cheeses, green salads, nuts and beans in moderation, some condiments, any sugar-free beverage, and even pork rinds!

The back of the book contains very extensive tables of many foods and how many grams of carbs enter the body for specific volume sizes – cups, ounces, pieces, tablespoons, packets, etc.

“Type 2 Diabetes: The Owner’s Manual” opened my eyes not only regarding diabetes but also to the real impact carbs of all kinds have on my body and my general health. Many readers can experience major improvements in their health simply by reading and understand, and then applying, the principles discussed in this book.

What a Godsend for all people who have, or are involved with epilepsy and seizures, that Schachter, sometimes with co-authors, with this amazing professional reputation and career, has had the insight and afforded the time to publish this Brainstorms Series of 6 books on epilepsy and seizures.

Each book in the Brainstorms Series each begins with the guidance of a brief introduction to epilepsy, written in simple, easily understood layman’s terms, but it is the heartrending personal stories in each book which have such enormous universal appeal – different people’s personal experiences and descriptions of seizures and epilepsy, across the globe – infants, young children, teenagers, parents, women, family, carers, teachers, work colleagues, professionals and so on.

The scope of these stories is enormous, covering innumerable classifications of seizures and epilepsy, written from the heart, bridging all ages, religions and cultures, while revealing the apprehension, heartache, grief and life changes, loss of lifetime dreams and expectations, that people with epilepsy must face and address… grapple with, and admirably, it seems, with so much determination, courage, as well as support and unconditional love from those around them.

When You Need To Changes Your Lifestyle

The “Gene Therapy Plan: Taking Control of Your Genetic Destiny with Diet and Lifestyle” by Dr. Michael L. Gaynor, M.D., is an excellent book that suggests not only how to stay healthy but what alternate plans to consider when you are sick and are not responding to your prescribed treatment.

The introduction to his book is written by Dr. Oz who has sent many of his patients to Dr. Gaynor for treatment as has many other physicians when their treatment plan is not working.

Dr. Gaynor, takes an integrative approach to medicine and offers very good advice on foods, drinks and natural substances to take advantage of to remain healthy, such as olive oil, coconut milk and oils, green tea, chamomile tea, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, juicing, etc.

But his plan goes far beyond eating foods that are healthy but seeks to harness the power hidden in foods to change our genetic predisposition for disease. In this approach Dr. Gaynor draws heavily on a branch of study known as ecogenetics.

Dr. Gaynor, discusses in terms we can understands how ecogenetic food changes our genetic blueprint and provides scientific data to support alternative therapies and age-old practices, The key approach is to use identified nutrients to combat disease and promote good health. That approach is called “nutrigenetics: and is the core principle of the Gene Therapy Plan.

The “Gene Therapy Plan” is designed to help you resist cancer, heart disease and diabetes, maintain a healthy weight, reverse low immunity, softening the effects of aging, remove toxins from the body, and to promote energy.

Dr. Gaynor has a lot of fascinating things to say about obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and aging in Part I. Then in Part II the author presents sample meal plans, recipes, and how to make several juices, smoothies and snacks. The recipes are very good; I’ve tried some and look forward to trying many more.

I’ve made some changes in my life as a result of reading this book. I am now substituting coconut milk for my flavored coffee cream, have returned to drinking green tea and having switched to orange and orange and lemon-flavored teas, and make sure broccoli and Brussels sprouts are included in my weekly meals. This book is certainly worth reading; it will provide lots of new insights and motivation to make changes for a more healthy life.

In the next 20 years, you may get bored seeing more and more books analyzing the effects of the current economic crisis and what brought it on.

I have a very old little book with the above title, by J.H. Brennan its pages are yellowed with age and it is looking very sad, but the contents are as relevant as ever. I am pleased to say the book is still available in bookshops, so that you can take advantage of the secrets too. I came across it the other day when I was doing some clearing out and re-read it, it is about changing you life by discovering what is important to you.

Because your self-image was pretty much formed by the time you were eight years old the book explains you are capable of much more than you think you are. There are quizzes within the pages to help you re-evaluate yourself and by changing your perspective you can change you self-image.

Tips To Living Your Dreams

The other day I pulled the above book from my bookshelves in order to re-read it. I find whenever I re-read a book after a period of time, I discover something new within its pages. A little gem of an idea I had missed before. I can never throw interesting books out I just buy more book shelves. Neither would I get the same enjoyment reading from a mechanical device, I like the feel of the pages and the book in my hands.

It is an unusual book; on the pack of each page are quotes from influential people on all manner of things. Words of wisdom; you can either contemplate them as you turn the pages or ignore them and press on with the main message of the chapter, if you are eager to discover the road to your dreams.

It is a work book taking you through a series of activities to find your ultimate dream. First you discover your dream, then through the pages you are given techniques for achieving it whatever it might be.

All the distractions that could get in your way are pointed out and how to deal with them. How to deal with fear of the unknown and all the other negative problem areas you could encounter.

Be prepared for some soul-searching and thought-provoking activities as you learn to discover your dream and how you can achieve it. It is a work-book with exercises if you choose to complete them.

If you are serious in achieving your purpose in life and living your dream or finding out what has been delaying you up until now it is an interesting thought-provoking book, which can certainly lead you in the right direction.

It is an easy book to read you could complete it on a lazy Sunday, or work through it chapter by chapter. I have read it many times and on each readings I notice further points I have missed before. It gives me renewed energy to put more lessons into practice. I can say over the years it has been an influence to my positive spirit and has helped me achieve many successes.

It gave me confidence to pass exams usually taken over a year, in a mere 5 months and get a place on a teacher training program, which I completed, travelling 70 miles a day whilst bringing up 3 children single-handed. It has since influenced me in building an online business, and I am planning to publish a book in the near future.

How To Stop Negativity

This challenge is taken from Anthony’s book “Awaken the Giant Within” as it is such a tomb 539 pages I have selected parts to review. I, like millions of others am a great fan of Anthony Robbins. I will tell you about the challenge, but there are also many other benefits from reading the book; It is a practical work-book.

Basically these are the rules of the challenge:

No dwelling on negative thoughts for 10 consecutive days.

When a negative thought appears, immediately replace it with a positive one.

Change the negative state. (For ways to do this, refer to the book)

for the next 10 days focus on solutions to your problems, not the problems.

If you allow yourself to indulge in a negative thought and don’t quickly replace it you must start again for another 10 consecutive days.

I consider myself a positive person but just lately I have had a number of set-backs in fact it has been a difficult year, and I do catch myself being negative. So I to will set myself the 10 days challenge too. If you want a longer description of the rules or need advise on changing negative states is all in the book together with loads of other helpful advice.

So after several falls in the past year, I have seen on a TV shopping channel, “Tai Cheng” a form of Tai Chi. They are a set of exercise videos intended to develop ones strength and balance. This is my first move in looking for solutions, and moving back into positive thinking and I have ordered them.

If you too take this challenge you will be moving towards empowerment and discarding negative ways. You can’t always change events but you can view them in a different light and find the best solutions.

Hopefully, however, you won’t need to experience a tragedy to have a wakeup call; instead, as Autumn explains, you just have to listen to your “inner nudges.”

Sadly, too many of us don’t listen to our nudges. We allow negativity and self-doubt to hold us back in life. Autumn illustrates this point by explaining how monkeys are captured on Borneo:

“On Borneo, the natives have a unique way of catching monkeys. They use a hollowed out coconut and some green bananas-the monkeys’ favorite treat. In one end of the coconut, they make a hole just big enough for an adult monkey’s open hand. They tether the other end of the coconut to a tree. Then they drop a banana into the coconut and scatter some around to bait the monkeys.”

“When a troop of monkeys shows up, one monkey will invariably find the coconut and stick in a hand and grab the banana. The monkey is then trapped. Not in the sense that the monkey can’t get away-all it has to do is let go of the banana, after all. But when the villagers show up the next day, they almost always find the monkey battered and bruised or dead of exhaustion because it spent its energy struggling to free its hand without releasing its grip.”

Too many people are like the monkeys. As a result, it may take something drastic for us to wake up and live our lives alive. Other times, we just need some guidance from someone like Autumn to help us move past our fears and doubts. Through her book’s pages, Autumn takes readers on a journey that addresses many of the things that hold them back from living up to their greatest potentials. From discussing overcoming fear to how to remove the masks we hide behind, and from creating a vision for our lives to taking steps to making that vision our reality, Autumn leads us down the path to becoming our own success stories.

Autumn also reminds us that success-however we want to define it-will take some work. Not that we should be intimidated by successful people, thinking we can’t accomplish what they have. She uses Facebook to illustrate this point: “We tend only to see the result, the success story, or the perfect life portrayed on Facebook. What if we could see the minutes of someone’s life instead of just his or her title or result? We tend to compare ourselves to everyone else’s success, but we judge ourselves by our minutes.”

We need to take the time to focus on our minutes. We need to realize that in those minutes, one piled on another, are the steps to our success provided we use each minute well. In the end, our nudges will lead to vision and work, and we will have a payoff finding rewards we least expect. Autumn illustrates this by referring to sunsets on Maui, where she now lives. (How she moved to Maui is a story of nudges answered that you’ll have to read for yourself). People often want to watch the sunset, but Autumn has observed that if they see the sky darken or cloud over just minutes beforehand, they figure the sunset won’t be worth watching so they leave. But Autumn knows the sunset still happens and will be beautiful and the sky may clear at the last minute: “But those other people left… right before. Why not wait the five minutes and just enjoy the air or watch the waves crash on shore? Why do we put so much emphasis on the exact time of the sunset and then walk away from it? As my son has pointed out, ‘Who cares about the sunset? The sky is always more colorful right afterwards.’ We make things the point and forget to enjoy the surrounding moments. We forget to enjoy the right before, the point, and the after… the moments.”

Living Your Life Alive is full of other beautiful moments that have important messages for us, but I’ll just conclude by mentioning that at the end of the book Autumn interviews a number of inspiring people who are examples of living your life alive. Among these people is Kimokeo Kapahulehua, a man who teaches others about Hawaiian Culture. In his interview, he remarks that when people ask him how he can paddle his canoe for hours and stay calm despite the unknown things out on the open sea, he replies, “Because they went before us.” Autumn goes on to explain, “Although we might not know our ancestors, they are with us. He [Kimokeo] just thinks about what his great-grandfather must have done with his mind or hands with the resources he had. He knows that many of his ancestors were doing what he is doing, years and years ago. He draws on their strength because it is now in him. He encourages you to draw on the strengths of those who have gone before you.”

I’ve often felt the same way Kimokeo does. After everything our ancestors have endured, and everything they did to make this world better for us, we have no excuses. We stand on their shoulders and they are cheering us on from a distance to live our lives alive.
